I've been out numerous times with bird hunters with multi-thousand dollar Brownings or others and they missfire or otherwise fail to preform. I've looked at $4000 Brownings that had grind marks and other groves in the chambers and parts.
Crescent made the guns up until 1915 and Stevens made them after 1915. I can identify you gun as having been made by Crescent. A word of caution.
I recently purchased a Remington 870 express magnum which wouldn't even eject the shells on the first firing. Remington Company wouldn't even give me a replacement barrel but made me send the brand new shotgun back to the factory for reboreing the burrs out of the shell chamber. I had to wait months for the work and didn't have the gun for the upcoming bird and waterfowl seasons. Arizona law prevented me from just simply taking the worthless gun back to the store. All the manufacturiers are cost cutting and I just don't expect any company to give you the quality product that they previously manufactured and sold. In fact I don't know any hunter that doesn't carry one or two back-up guns, shotgun or rifle, because of the possibility that the primary gun will fail during the hunt.

There was a gun factory in Norwich, Conn., that was owned by H&D Folsom Arms Co., 314 Broadway, New York City, from about 1893 to 1930. They made a lot of very low priced shotguns for H&D Folsom to market under the American Gun Co.

I've never seen another Hopkins & Allen shotgun just like mine. I've seen a few that were similar, but not the same. If the counterfeiter is good he will use the correct markings and since there is no records of Wells Fargo guns who can tell the difference. So, most knowledgeable collectors will yarn and ho-humn as they walk away.

There really wasn't a American Gun Company, that was an in house name used by the H&D Folsom Co ( a very large sporting goods distributor in the first part of the 20Th century. ) Your shotgun is a Crescent Arms Co.
Buy one and do as I did, polish the metal and have it reblued as the finish still shows some imperfections out of the box, and refinish the walnut wood. Mine will soon look like a gun equal in quality to my Browning. Don't be afraid to buy one! Answer I completely disagree with the guy who said he would rather have a Baikal than a Browning. Polish the parts - he's got to be kidding. This is an admission of poor craftsmanship to begin with.

Reblue it - I can't believe what I'm readimg. Heck, one might as well get milling tools and make the gun from scratch. I would rather have a Browning on whick all the bluing was worn off, the stock was scarred and worn and had been shot 20,000 times, than a wagon load of Baikals. As far as I am concerned they would just be scrap iron anyway. Answer The Baikal is worth just as much as any good shotgun in the $500 range. After all this time I decided to clean it up and research it. I was already aware of all the info you sent, but just wanted to see if i could find a approximate date of manufacture. By the way, thanks for the 2 flyers that you included. I had found one and it is different than what you sent. I contacted some powder companies about the gun and got some info relative to the shells back then. They were helpful and informed me of the 2 1/2 in shells. I located a fella that loaded low pressure 2 1/2 in shells and purchased a box that arrived last week.

What we can say is take the gun gun to a good qualified gunsmith for a hands on examination and if he says it's in a shootable condition, then yes but using only appropriate ammunition.

I recommend that you do not attempt to shoot the gun but if you insist, have it checked out by a competent gunsmith, have your life insurance paid up and have a few fingers, hand or eye to spare. Ive had this gun for some time now and got it from a guy that I was doing some cabinet work for and he didn't have all the $ to pay me for after I went to collect. So in some trade, he said he found the gun in his grandmothers attic and handed it to me for my trouble trying to collect.
