Plutonia was specifically made for Final Doom after Evilution had been acquired. It was knocked out in just four months by the Casalis. About the only point where this astoundingly accelerated development schedule shows is in the general blandness of most maps. The lighting is often strong and moody, but the texture work is fairly plain and without much variety or decoration. There's a few interesting visual twists (like an invisible bridge early on), but architecture isn't the point here. Plutonia is entirely about challenging combat, and the most insane odds and situations in the series.

I beat both campaigns on the hardest official difficulty (Nightmare being more a gag than a real challenge) back in college when I had more time than sense. As detailed in my Doom II review, my initial article was pretty dismissive, so I loaded the campaigns up again to do it right.
How tough a time you'll have is basically determined by when a large group of monsters in another room stumble into some teleporters - if you end up surrounded, it's over. Not to mention, your ammo supplies are extremely limited, as this is the first level. Level 2 puts you in a big, open fight right at the start with no cover and only lava ahead of you. You'll be trying to hold back five to six floating Cacodemons with nothing but whatever shotgun and pistol ammo you have left over from the first level. Here, Doom starts to shift from the run-n-gun action most people know it for, to the kind of 'combat puzzle' gameplay exemplified by The Plutonia Experiment. Luck starts to factor in, along with preparation earned from many, many deaths.
Overall, Evilution does feel like a set of levels in the style of id's own team - which would be a compliment if it weren't for all the reasons laid out at the top of the page. The Plutonia Experiment is a different story.

Doom was still more than worth playing even after Doomsday changed the world and gave us the juicy followup. I played the game in April/May 95 for the first time and had a hard time beliving what my eyes were seeing. I was so impressed that it motivated me to start coding myself and learn what an how on earth such a treat could be realized on the meager hardware of yesterday also the enquiry who would be talented enough to pull off such a amalgamation of pure awesome. The level design is often criticized on forums like Doomworld(.)com were the “grand masters” decided that especially Petersons maps(city levels for example) are just sandbox maps or simply shite. Even McGees and Romeros entries have a hard time pleasing the “experts” when it comes to them being worthy of Episode 1 in the original Doom. I personally found some of the city maps pretty intiguing and exploring them was awesome especially if you’re a secret fiend. DoomII has a very distinct feel to it and what was a bit of a precursor to what finally took form in Quake – everything is something of a wild hodgepodge BUT somehow it seems to fit together and this chaos being exactly what makes it so unpredictable and a classic.
The challenge is tough, but manageable. While most levels are smartly designed, Evilution is also almost expressly just for people that want more Doom II. You will find no new weapons or monsters, no new engine tricks, and nothing beyond the new levels. New artwork is extremely limited.
