For the most part I find the rears help to give the surround soundstage better balance and coverage. Anyway, play Everest again and go up to your rear channels and confirm if they are indeed silent. Glen Hi Jonathan I’ve reset my RZ800 and my BD player and then double checked the rears again with Everest and they are still silent. The heights are kicking in nicely but no sound from the rears. I think I know what the issue might be: My Onkyo is 7.2.2 (with separate speaker posts for rear surrounds and separate speaker posts for heights) but it’s actually only a 5.2.2 Atmos system.

I was able to get 5.1 Surround from Amazon Fire TV but apps such as YouTube and Netflix on Fire TV stick can only output stereo. From the BluRay player, I have an option to set to PCM and Bitstream with both setting output stereo sound. Seems like I need to get another device to get the surround sound. Any suggestion on a device that can output 5.1 surround on Youtue, Netflix, Kodi or any other 3rd party video players?
There were differences, though, mostly with the 'above' effects. There was still a sense of 'above', but it was a bit vague, and not always in the right place. I assume this was due to the MP3 process removing too many 'unnecessary' frequencies. (I do realise this test is a bit unfair, as 5.1 isn't even supposed to have height!) One part of the track was recorded in a huge dome in India, where children clap and shout into a natural repeat echo. Although this still sounded good in MP3 Surround, it was here that the limitations showed up. The echoes that faded to silence were OK, but at one point there is a maxlevel (0dB) handclap, right next to the mics, that in the DTS version opens up the acoustic and explodes into ambience. The MP3 Surround version of this is disappointing and sounds very obviously 'compressed'.
I couldn’t help but break out my copy of the music and make a few performance notes. Listening to solo instruments this way really satisfies my curiosity and wish to understand the process. The M17 is not only a great-sounding preamp, it serves as a professional reference tool. At no time was I tempted to try the surround modes with two-channel music.

The whole track was generally 'smaller' and there was a very unpleasant effect like a very slow, pumping compression where the overall level would suddenly drop for no reason. My experience with NAD told me to expect excellent detail, broad dynamic range, and a neutral presentation. But with the addition of Dirac Live, this processor takes things to a whole new level.
